The best platforms to hire data engineers in 2026, compared by how they work
Last updated 18 Oct 2026
The best platform to hire a data engineer depends on how you want to hire: a vetted network matches you with pre-screened freelancers, an open marketplace lets you post and screen anyone yourself, a fractional marketplace finds part-time senior people, and a self-serve data talent platform lets you post a role and review vetted data specialists directly. Below we compare the main options in each group using each platform's own published claims, dated 18 October 2026, and say who each one suits. We make carbon.talent, which is one of the options, so we've held it to the same standard.
How to choose (four questions)
- Engagement: permanent, contract or fractional? Some platforms are freelance-only.
- Who screens: the platform, you, or both?
- Who matches: a person at the platform, an algorithm, or you?
- Specialism: data-only, or general software talent that includes data?

carbon.talent (us)
What it is: a data and AI talent platform. You post a role (permanent, contract or fractional; remote or on-site; you set the overlap hours), see applicants ranked by fit, and review vetted profiles. Vetted profiles show a vetting report from Carbon's real-world data experience test (scenario-based data judgement, not a coding test), a working-style profile and a short video intro. Each interview comes with a guide tailored to the role and the candidate. You agree the rate, draft the contract and sign on the platform. ID checks and the Carbon AI connector for AI assistants are on Team and Scale. You can also test a candidate you found elsewhere. Best for: hiring managers and recruiters filling data roles who want to run the hire themselves, globally, across engagement types. Less suited to: non-data software roles, or teams that want a person at the platform to hand-pick candidates for them. Post your role free. Toptal
- Says it accepts "fewer than 3%" of applicants after a language and personality evaluation, a skill review, a live screening and a test project. [1]
- Says engagements begin with "a trial period of up to two weeks", and you are not billed if you are not satisfied. [1]
- Says you can hire on an hourly, part-time or full-time basis, and that you can typically hire in about 48 hours. [1]
- A client advisor matches you; you don't browse an open pool. [1] Best for: senior freelancers quickly, when you want the platform to do the matching.
Arc
- Says freelance data engineers can be matched in roughly 72 hours and full-time hires made in about 14 days. [2]
- Says vetted developers pass a profile screening, a behavioural interview and a technical interview or pair programming, and describes them as the top 2% of applicants. [2]
- Offers freelance, full-time, part-time and contract-to-hire; notes its job-posting option does not give access to already-vetted developers. [2] Best for: remote software and data engineers when you want both freelance and full-time options.
Proxify
- Describes itself as "Europe's largest vetted tech talent network" and says only around 1% of applicants join. [3]
- Says every data engineer completes five vetting stages, including a live technical interview with senior engineers, and that you receive matches within an average of two days after a discovery call. [3]
- Says there's no commitment until you approve a match and you can move the engineer to your own payroll. [3] Best for: senior contract engineers, especially if Europe-based time zones suit you.
Upwork
- An open marketplace: you post a job, review proposals and profiles, and interview. [4]
- Payment is hourly or by milestone, with work history and client ratings on each profile. [4]
- Screening is largely yours to do; profiles listed under "data engineers" include adjacent skills (for example lead generation and data entry), so filter carefully. [4] Best for: well-defined projects where you're comfortable vetting candidates yourself.
Go Fractional
- A fractional talent marketplace; says candidates are matched in about 3 days on average. [5]
- Says data engineers are pre-screened by executive recruiters on technical track record, references and production experience. [5]
- Offers a monthly fractional retainer, interim (full-time for a defined period) and contract-to-hire. [5] Best for: part-time senior data engineers or data leaders, mainly in the US, UK and Europe per its site. [5]
Specialist data recruiters
Recruitment agencies that focus on data and analytics roles source and screen for you, usually for permanent hires. They're worth it when the role is senior, the market is thin, and you don't have time to run the search. Ask how they assess technical depth, not just CV fit.
Also worth knowing
- Your own network and recommendations from people you trust still produce strong data hires; combine them with a structured interview.
- Hiring abroad: if the person is in a country where you have no entity, an employer of record (EOR) can employ them for you. Carbon is not an EOR.
