Analytics Engineer Salary

Analytics engineers sit between analysts and data engineers. In the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, the nearest occupations are Database Architects for modelling-heavy roles, Database Administrators for some warehouse-focused roles and Data Scientists for roles that are mainly analytical. None is a match; comparing them shows the range analytics engineering spans.

In ONS ASHE, analytics engineers are usually classified as Data analysts or Programmers and software development professionals. Looking at both in Table 14 gives a sense of the band between analysis and engineering where most analytics engineering roles fall.

Pay tends to follow how close the role is to engineering. Analytics engineers who own CI, testing, performance and warehouse costs, or who lead semantic layer work across many teams, tend to be paid closer to data engineers. Roles focused on building marts for a single team sit closer to analyst pay.

Evidence of impact helps in negotiation: cutting warehouse spend, reducing run times or making key metrics consistent across tools are concrete outcomes employers value.

Contract analytics engineering often comes as fixed-scope work such as audits, setups and refactors, priced per project or by the day. Fixed-price work rewards clear scoping; compare it with a salary on a full-year basis, including time spent winning work.
