Data Scientist Pay in the United Kingdom
Last updated 18 Oct 2026
UK official statistics do not have a data scientist occupation, so UK candidates have to piece together a picture from related occupations. Here is how to do that carefully and what else shapes pay. No figures are quoted.
Choosing UK proxies
In ASHE Table 14, check Actuaries, economists and statisticians for statistical and modelling roles, Programmers and software development professionals for engineering-heavy roles and Data analysts for analytics-focused roles. The first occupation is relatively small, so its estimates can be less precise and some percentiles are suppressed. Note the coefficient of variation for each.
What affects UK data scientist pay
London finance, insurance and technology firms compete strongly for experienced data scientists, particularly in pricing, risk, fraud and experimentation. The public sector and universities may offer different pay with stronger pensions and flexibility. Skills in production machine learning, causal inference and LLM evaluation broaden the roles you can target.
Regional differences remain for employee roles, though remote and hybrid hiring has spread opportunities beyond London.
Contract data science in the UK
UK contract data scientists are typically paid day rates, with take-home shaped by IR35 status and whether you work through a limited company or umbrella company. Compare against full-time offers after tax, pension and gaps between contracts.
Why there is no UK data scientist occupation
The UK's Standard Occupational Classification was last revised as SOC 2020. Data scientist was a growing title then, but ONS grouped the work under existing occupations depending on the tasks people described. That is why one data scientist may be coded alongside statisticians and economists, another alongside software developers and another alongside data analysts. When you read ASHE, you are seeing those broader groups, not data scientists specifically.
A practical approach is to decide which group your day-to-day work resembles most: statistical modelling and experimentation, production code, or analysis and reporting. Use that occupation as your main reference and the others as boundaries.
How to read precision and gaps
Each ASHE estimate comes with a coefficient of variation. Higher values mean the estimate is less precise, and ONS suppresses figures that fall below its quality threshold, which often affects upper percentiles in smaller occupations. A missing figure means the sample was too small to publish reliably, not that nobody earns at that level. Provisional results are revised a year later, so check which release you are reading.
Other UK reference points
Public sector data science roles, including government data science and NHS analytics posts, usually publish pay bands in the advert, which are more direct for those employers than any proxy. For private sector roles, read several current job adverts in your sector and region alongside ASHE, and ask recruiters which skills move offers up: production machine learning, experimentation at scale and specialist domains such as pricing or risk are common examples.
Outside the UK
Outside the United States and the United Kingdom, carbon.talent does not publish pay figures yet. We will add other countries only when we have reliable data of our own, and we do not publish estimates in the meantime. If you are outside these two countries, national statistics offices, salary surveys run by professional bodies and conversations with recruiters and peers in your market are better guides than converting US or UK figures.
Common questions
- Does ONS publish data scientist pay?
- Not as a separate occupation. Use Actuaries, economists and statisticians, Programmers and software development professionals, and Data analysts as proxies.
- Why are some ASHE figures missing?
- ONS suppresses estimates that are not reliable enough, often for smaller occupations or upper percentiles.
- Are UK contract data scientists paid differently?
- They are usually paid day rates, and take-home depends on IR35 status and structure.
- Does carbon.talent take a cut of contract rates?
- No.
