Machine Learning Engineer Salary

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook classifies most ML engineers under Software Developers, and some research-oriented roles under Computer and Information Research Scientists. The software developer occupation is very large and broad, so its distribution reflects many non-ML roles; the research scientist occupation is smaller and skews towards advanced research. Read both as boundaries rather than a precise answer.

In ONS ASHE, ML engineers are most likely classified as Programmers and software development professionals. That occupation covers a wide range of software work, so treat Table 14 as context rather than a match.

Production ownership is central. Engineers who have deployed models at scale, built feature pipelines, managed inference cost and handled monitoring and retraining are in a different market from those with prototype experience. Experience with large language models, retrieval and evaluation is currently sought after, as is GPU and distributed training expertise.

Company type matters a great deal. AI-focused companies and large technology firms compete for ML engineers with equity as well as salary, which official statistics do not capture.

Contract ML engineers usually work on scoped builds such as serving pipelines or evaluation systems, priced by the day or project. Compare a contract rate with a salary only after accounting for benefits, equipment, compute you may need to fund and time between contracts.
