Data Analyst Salary
Last updated 18 Oct 2026
The UK and US treat data analysts differently in their official statistics. The UK has a dedicated occupation for data analysts; the US does not, so American analysts need to look at related occupations. This page shows where to look and what shapes analyst pay. We quote no figures; the links take you to the published data.
United Kingdom: a dedicated occupation
Since the move to SOC 2020, ONS ASHE includes an occupation called Data analysts, so UK analysts can look up a direct match in ASHE Table 14. It covers employee jobs, includes percentiles where the sample is large enough, and marks some upper percentiles as unavailable when estimates are not reliable. Check the coefficient of variation column, which tells you how precise each estimate is.
United States: matching your work to a BLS occupation
If your work involves modelling, optimisation or decision analysis, BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Operations Research Analysts is often the closest fit. If it is customer, market or campaign analysis, Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists may be closer, though that occupation also includes many marketing roles. If your role is titled analyst but involves predictive modelling, compare with Data Scientists.
Each occupation page links to state and metro pay data. Compare the area where you live, and for remote roles, ask employers how they set location bands.
What shapes US analyst pay
Industry is a major factor: finance, technology and consulting usually differ from retail, non-profits and local government. Seniority and scope matter more than the title, since some analyst roles are close to data science and others close to reporting.
Benefits and bonuses vary widely. Compare total packages, including health insurance and retirement matching.
Contract analysts in the US
Contract analysts may be on 1099 terms or W-2 through a staffing firm. The two differ in who pays taxes and benefits, so compare carefully.
What drives data analyst pay
Analyst pay varies widely because the title covers very different jobs. Reporting-focused roles that maintain dashboards sit differently from analysts who own experiments, build forecasts or advise leadership. SQL depth, a strong BI tool, Python for automation and statistics for experimentation all broaden the roles you can apply for.
Domain knowledge is underrated. Analysts who understand pricing, credit risk, supply chain or product growth are often valued more than generalists with similar technical skills.
Contract and freelance analysts
Contract analysts are usually paid by the day or hour, and freelance analysts often by project. Those rates must cover leave, equipment, tax administration and time spent finding work, so they are not comparable with salaries at face value. Fractional analysts often agree a monthly retainer for a set number of days.
Other countries
Outside the United States and the United Kingdom, carbon.talent does not publish pay figures yet. We will add other countries only when we have reliable data of our own, and we do not publish estimates in the meantime. If you are outside these two countries, national statistics offices, salary surveys run by professional bodies and conversations with recruiters and peers in your market are better guides than converting US or UK figures.
