Data Analyst Pay in the United Kingdom

Last updated 18 Oct 2026

UK data analysts have a direct match in official statistics: ONS ASHE includes a Data analysts occupation under SOC 2020. This page explains how to read it and what else to weigh. No figures are quoted.

Reading ASHE for data analysts

Find Data analysts in ASHE Table 14. You will see the median, mean and percentiles where reliable, plus the number of jobs and the change from the previous year. Some upper percentiles may be suppressed; that means the estimate was not precise enough, not that nobody earns at that level.

For regional comparisons, see the ASHE region by occupation tables. London typically differs from other regions, although hybrid and remote hiring has narrowed some gaps.

What moves UK analyst pay

Analysts who own experimentation, forecasting or commercial decisions tend to progress faster than those focused on routine reporting. SQL depth, Power BI or Tableau, Python and domain knowledge in finance, retail or healthcare all help. Public sector analyst roles often follow published pay scales.

Contract analysts in the UK

Contract analysts are typically paid day rates, often through a limited company or umbrella company, and IR35 status affects take-home. Compare contract and full-time options after tax, pension, leave and gaps.

How ASHE is collected, and what that means for you

ASHE is based on a sample of employee jobs taken from HMRC PAYE records, with employers reporting pay for a reference period in April each year. Because it comes from employer records rather than self-reported surveys, it avoids the optimism that affects many online salary tools. The trade-off is timing: provisional results appear in the autumn and are revised a year later, so the newest figures describe pay several months before you read them.

Use the provisional release for the latest picture and the revised release when you need the most accurate comparison over time. Year-on-year changes for a single occupation can move around because of sampling, so look at the direction over several years rather than one change.

Using the table in a negotiation

Place yourself on the distribution before quoting any figure. A recent graduate in a reporting role, an analyst with several years of SQL and stakeholder work, and a senior analyst leading experiments sit at very different points. Pair the ASHE percentiles with the specific job description, the sector and the region, and be ready to explain why your experience puts you where it does.

Public sector analyst roles, including government analytical professions and NHS analytics teams, usually publish pay bands in the job advert. Those bands are a more direct guide for those employers than ASHE, and they often come with stronger pensions.

Full-time, contract and fractional analysts in the UK

ASHE covers employees, so it tells you nothing about contract day rates or fractional retainers. Contract analysts usually work through a limited company or umbrella company, and IR35 status shapes take-home. Fractional analysts typically agree a monthly retainer for a set number of days. Compare each option with a full-time salary on a whole-year basis: tax, pension, leave, insurance and time between engagements all count.

Outside the UK

Outside the United States and the United Kingdom, carbon.talent does not publish pay figures yet. We will add other countries only when we have reliable data of our own, and we do not publish estimates in the meantime. If you are outside these two countries, national statistics offices, salary surveys run by professional bodies and conversations with recruiters and peers in your market are better guides than converting US or UK figures.
